Fleece, minus the faff

Fleece problems? Sorted.

We’re a small UK business of guinea pig lovers, so we know these fleece headaches well. Here’s what we do about each one.

  • Hay and hair glued to the fleece?

    • Give it a shake outside and a once-over with a rubber brush before it goes anywhere near the washing machine.
  • Hair clogging your washing machine?

    • Shake and brush it outside first, then wash it zipped inside an old duvet cover. Stray hay and hair stay in there, not in your filter.
  • Still smells after a wash?

    • It’s usually detergent build-up, not the fleece. Use less detergent, skip fabric softener, add a splash of white vinegar to the softener drawer and run an extra rinse.
    • Move the hay corner and hideys around now and then so the busy spots get a break.
  • Nothing to put down while it dries?

    • Get two and save 10%: one in the cage, one in the wash. Three saves 20%, so there’s always a clean one ready.
  • Shrunk, or never fitted in the first place?

    • Five C&C sizes, from 2×1 to 5×2 plus lofts. Measure the inside of your cage floor and pick the match.
  • Piggies sneaking underneath?

    • Pick the size that covers the whole floor, edge to edge: gaps are where they sneak under. Hideys and the hay corner on top help it lie flat.

How it works: five easy steps that help keep hay out of your machine, with a clean liner always ready to go.

  1. Shaking hay off a Salad Bar fleece liner outside1Shake it outTake it outside, give it a good shake and brush off hay and hair with a rubber brush or a rubber glove.
  2. Zipping a Strawberry Patch fleece liner into an old duvet cover2Cover itZip it inside an old duvet cover so stray bits stay out of your machine. Clean the machine’s filter every so often too.
  3. Adding a small dose of detergent to the washing machine drawer3Go easy on the soapA small dose of pet-safe, non-bio detergent and no fabric softener. A splash of white vinegar in the softener drawer and an extra rinse help with smells.
  4. A Sleepy Stars fleece liner air-drying on a wooden clothes airer4Dry it flatAir-dry on a rack or the line. Skip the tumble dryer and the radiator.
  5. Smoothing a fresh Hay There fleece liner into the cage5Swap in the sparePop the clean one in while this one dries, then stand back for the grand inspection. That’s why most piggy parents keep two.

Every floopi liner carries a small woven floopi tag.
